In honour of Father’s Day, we sat down with Lee Harvey Atkins, a Level 3 Practitioner at Handkerchief Nursery School, to discuss his journey and the significant role of male educators in early childhood education.
Name: Lee Harvey Atkins
Role: Level 3 Nursery Practitioner
What inspired you to pursue a career in education?
My journey began at a charity called Messy Tots, where I developed a deep passion for childcare. This experience ignited my desire to pursue a career dedicated to nurturing and supporting children’s development.
Breaking Stereotypes: Lee’s Journey in Early Years Education
Working in a nursery as a male might seem unconventional to some, but to me, it’s a deeply fulfilling and enriching experience. Every day, I have the opportunity to shape young minds, foster creativity, and build a nurturing environment for children at a crucial stage in their development. Working in a nursery as a male challenges stereotypes and highlights the importance of diverse role models in early childhood education. It’s a journey of joy, learning, and growth, not just for the children, but for me as well.
Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Achievements
As a neurodivergent male, I’ve faced numerous challenges on my journey. Academic struggles were part of my path, but today, I take pride in my accomplishments and the meaningful contribution I make to early childhood education.
Can you share a memorable moment you’ve had with the children?
One of the most memorable moments for me was witnessing a small group of children under two years old surpassing their own expectations by enthusiastically throwing and catching balls together during our activities. It was a joy to see their confidence and coordination grow right before my eyes.
How do you think male educators positively impact young children?
Male educators positively impact young children by providing a diverse and balanced environment. Some children may find it easier to open up to male figures, just as they do with female figures. Having both male and female educators allows children to experience different perspectives, fostering a more comprehensive and inclusive learning environment. Each gender brings unique strengths and approaches, enriching the overall development and experiences of the children.
What do you think is the most important role of a male role model in a child’s early education?
To be a positive male figure in their life and show them that men can be both nurturing and caring.

What’s your favourite children’s book to read to the children, and why?
My favourite book to read to the children is “The Gruffalo.” I love it because it allows me to use different sounds and voices, making the story come alive. The way the little creature outsmarts the big creature is captivating, and the children are always fully engaged every time we read it together. It’s a joy to see their excitement and anticipation as the story unfolds.
